(EnergyAsia, May 29, Thursday) — Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) plans to invest up to 5 billion dinars to upgrade and expand two of its refineries. (US$1=0.26 dinar).

The company is due to launch tenders calling for upgrading the Mina Abdullah and Mina Al-Ahmadi refineries this August.
KNPC aims to add 200,000 b/d of capacities to the refineries, bringing their total to 800,000 b/d.

At the same time, Kuwait plans to build a new grassroots refinery while closing its aging Shuaiba unit by 2011.

Kuwait’s overall refining capacity currently stands at 930,000 b/d. This will rise to 1.4 million b/d in the next few years if all expansion plans are realised.
