(EnergyAsia, May 31 2010, Monday) — Koen Verniers, 39, has been named President of Oiltanking Asia Pacific, managing director of Oiltanking Singapore and CEO of Oiltanking Odfjell Terminal Singapore from August 1.

He succeeds Rutger van Thiel who has been promoted to become managing director of one of the world’s largest oil storage firm, Oiltanking GmbH of Germany’s Marquard & Bahls group. Mr van Thiel will replace Gust Spaepen who is leaving for private reasons, said the company.

Mr Verniers, a graduate of Belgium’s University of Antwerp in 1992 with a Master Degree in Applied Economic Science and Commercial Engineering, is currently the general manager of Oiltanking Texas City in the US.

In a statement, Marquard & Bahls said Mr van Thiel expanded Oiltanking’s business in Southeast Asia since 2004, making Singapore one of the largest profit centres within the Oiltanking Group.

The company also paid tribute to Mr Spaepen for having “continuously expanded the company’s business activities, increasing the total capacity of the Oiltanking Group from 10.9 million cbm in 2004 to a current volume of 17.2 million cbm. This capacity is spread over 69 terminals in 21 countries.”
