started production ahead of schedule, said engineering giant Foster Wheeler Ltd which helped design and build the plant.

Foster Wheeler said the work was undertaken by the UK and Singapore subsidiaries of its Global Engineering and Construction Group.

The new 120,000-tonne-per-year plant, which is already running at capacity, will supply customers in Asia where demand for MMA has grown most rapidly.

Foster Wheeler said: “This plant is the first in the world to use Lucite International UK Limited’s proprietary state-of-the-art Alpha technology to produce MMA.”

According to Lucite International, its Alpha technology offers 40% savings over existing technologies in both construction and production, and has the potential to revolutionise the cost base for MMA production.

“We are delighted that Lucite International has started production from its Alpha 1 plant in Singapore ahead of schedule,” said Umberto della Sala, president and chief operating officer, Foster Wheeler Ltd.

“We believe that the early start-up of this ‘first-of-a kind’ plant is a reflection of the quality of our people, our engineering and our project execution, and our close working relationship with our client. We are particularly proud that this plant has been completed with a world-class safety performance, with no lost-time incidents in 4.4 million hours worked on site.”

Foster Wheeler’s Teesside, UK operation is working on the front-end engineering design for Lucite International’s planned 250,000-tonne-per-year Alpha 2 plant.

“The partnership and teamwork between Lucite International and Foster Wheeler has been first class,” said Neil Sayers, vice president, European Business and Global Technology, Lucite International Singapore Pte. Ltd.

“This has led to a tremendous result in terms of designing, constructing and commissioning this ‘first-of-a-kind’ technology safely and ahead of plan.”
