(EnergyAsia, August 11 2011, Thursday) —- Shell said its Cansolv Technologies Inc subsidiary has signed an agreement to license its proprietary scrubbing system technology to remove sulphur dioxide from a new 1.2 GW coal-fired power plant to be built at Duyun in China’s Guizhou province.
Montreal-based Cansolv signed the agreement with Beijing Guodian Longyuan Environmental Engineering Co (GDLY) to desulphurise flue gas from the plant to be built by China Guodian Corporation Ltd.
Cansolv, which will also supply the Chinese firm with engineering services and its unique sulphur dioxide absorbent, said its system is a regenerable technology that captures more than 99.9% of sulphur dioxide emissions.
“It is highly flexible and used in a broad range of industrial applications. The high purity of the captured sulphur dioxide makes it ideal for conversion into sulphuric acid, and in Duyun, this will provide further value through its use in a local fertiliser plant,” said Cansolv.
“By selecting the regenerable CANSOLV system, GDLY can avoid more than one million tonnes per year of landfill produced from conventional non-regenerable systems, which utilise a once-through absorbent that cannot be reused and therefore generates effluent streams. A regenerable desulfurisation technology can reuse an absorbent by recycling it through the system over and over again, resulting in less waste and cost savings without the need to restock.”
GDLY, a subsidiary of China Guodian Corporation, a major Chinese power generation company, is a leader in implementing flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) technology.
Steve Bryce, President of Cansolv, said: “This use of Cansolv’s technology by GDLY will enable Guodian to meet tightening local air quality standards as they increase the availability of electricity to consumers in Guizhou.”
Liu Hanqiang, GDLY’s Vice General Manager, said: “GDLY is committed to integrating regenerable desulphurisation technology in the Chinese power sector. Our selection of a Cansolv system for sulphur dioxide capture at Duyun power plant is a highly significant moment for both GDLY and Cansolv, and shows that desulphurisation technology in China is entering a new era.”
Cansolv was acquired by ShellGlobal Solutions International BV, a Royal Dutch Shell group, in November 2008.
