(EnergyAsia, September 23 2011, Friday) — Energy professionals from more than 50 countries attending this week’s CWC 3rd World LNG Series: Asia Pacific Summit in Singapore confirmed that surging Asian demand will drive the industry’s global development in coming years.

More than 270 delegates, with over 70% from outside Singapore, attended the event at the Shangri La Hotel from September 19-21, hosted by organiser The CWC Group.

The event featured 25 presentations, two panel sessions, a workshop, a roundtable for liquefied natural gas (LNG) buyers and sellers and hours of networking starting with a pre‐summit ‘contracting and shipping’ workshop hosted by lawfirm Baker Botts on September 19.

BG Group’s General Manager Anthony Barker hosted the official opening reception and registration evening on September 19.

The summit was officially opened the following day by Teo Eng Cheong, CEO of the International Enterprise Singapore, a major supporter of the event.

Mr Teo gave a positive overview of the global gas and Asian markets, noting that 80% of demand growth has been from the emerging markets, with 10 import terminals due to start up in Asia over the coming years. Singapore’s LNG terminal is expected to begin operations by mid-2013.

Jose Layug Jr, Undersecretary of Department of Energy, Philippines, outlined his country’s master plan for developing natural gas as an energy source which includes using LNG for power and road transportation “trying to reduce reliance on conventional products” and expecting to have 1,000 CNG-operated buses in use by 2013.

Other distinguished speakers included senior representation from Gazprom Marketing and Trading Singapore, Malaysian Gas Association, Yemen LNG, Petronet, Chevron Global Gas, GAIL (India) Ltd, China Power Petrochemical International Corporation, Braemar Seascope, The World Bank, Qatargas, Jordan Cove, and others.

Official Chair Pat Roberts concluded the summit on an upbeat note that the natural gas and LNG industry has strong prospects, driven by demand from growing economies in Asia and the emerging markets.
