(EnergyAsia, May 7 2012, Monday) — Mechel OAO, a leading Russian mining and metals company, said subsidiary Southern Kuzbass Coal Company OAO has resumed production at its Sibirginsk mine.
Southern Kuzbass suspended operations at the open-pit mine near the town of Irkutsk in central Siberia last June due to coal self-heating in the mined-out area.
The company, which operates another open pit mines in Krasnogorsk, Tomusinsk and Olzherassk, said it has completed the assembly of a new mechanised complex at Sibirginsk’s long wall face # 3-1-9.
The mine has recoverable reserves of 1.5 million tonnes, with the breakage face expected to produce 100,000 tonnes of coal a month.
Mechel Mining Management Company’s CEO Boris Nikishichev said Sibirginsk’s resumption of operations will enable the company to increase production and sales of coking coal to positively impact its financial performance.
